Lots of discussion around Sabbath and Ozzy in the days following his death. Rightfully so, they are being widely credited with the creation of heavy metal. Tbh it’s just remarkable how fully formed the doom metal sound is on this record from the very start. There is probably over a hundred bands I absolutely love that are just doing the entire thing note for note + tone for tone. But the one aspect of Ozzy’s performance that I don’t see replicated nearly as often (showcased perfectly in this song) is how fucking scared he sounds. Every metal vocalist is trying to be scary, BE the monster, but Ozzy sounds like he’s literally trapped inside the song with these monster riffs and he’s very upset about the whole situation. I find that infinitely more compelling from a listener standpoint. I hate guttural vocals with the exception like idk, norma jean? Rob Zombie if you count that? Overly masculine metal monster posturing always turns me off and I get huge writers block when I get kickass metal instrumentals from my boys and I have no idea how to monster up and match the vibe. Just wanted to pop on and give Ozzy his flowers for bringing a different character to the table, I wish more metal bands would follow his lead
